Overview

The purpose of the project was to provide structural support to the proposed toilet block and viewing gallery on Southend Pier. Due to the nature of the proposed toilet block that is intended to “sit” on the pier, the existing pier structure was considered insufficient to support the proposed load. The new toilet block sits on the same footprint as a previously demolished toilet block, the original structure was supported by timber cantilever beams which are deemed structurally insufficient; therefore a new steel structure was proposed.

The project was carried out on behalf of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and is a part of the £2.5million capital investment into Southend-on-Sea’s pier head, following engagement with residents and visitors.

GPS MACS were awarded the works as Principle Contractor. The challenging site required detailed planning and precision execution, working alongside the Grade 2 listed Pier and 1.5km off the coast.

UXO clearance from subsurface around the works area

Health and Safety

No accidents with 4375 hours worked across the project in a challenging location

Innovation

Leg Penetration Assessments and Geotechnical Review identified that the ground posed a significant risk of punch through of the Jack Up Barge legs. To reduce this risk, cyclic preloading techniques were adopted and all vibro piling operations were to be restricted if used. Careful selection of the JUB and operating weights was implemented without incident.

Heritage Assets

The new works implemented replicate the existing Grade 2 listed pier and seamlessly merge into the structure. All works installed without damage to the existing steelwork and decking.
