Carbon Reduction

Our Commitment

GPS Marine and Civil Services Ltd (GPS MACS) is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions across its UK operations by 2050.

We recognise that marine and civil engineering activities require the use of vessels, heavy plant, vehicles and carbon-intensive construction materials. However, our marine capability also provides opportunities to move heavy plant, equipment and materials efficiently by water, reducing reliance on road transport where this is a suitable and practical option.

We aim to maximise these advantages through effective project planning, efficient mobilisation and demobilisation, coordinated deliveries and the appropriate use of waterways throughout project delivery.

GPS MACS operates an environmental management system certified to ISO 14001, providing a structured framework for managing our environmental impacts and driving continual improvement.

We are continuing to improve our understanding of our carbon footprint by developing the scope, accuracy and consistency of our emissions data. This will help us identify where our most significant emissions arise, set meaningful targets and implement practical reduction measures while continuing to deliver projects safely and effectively.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan

GPS MACS maintains a detailed Carbon Reduction Plan explaining how we measure, manage and seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across our operations.

The plan sets out our emissions baseline, reporting methodology, reporting boundaries, reduction targets, carbon intensity measures, current and planned initiatives, and management responsibilities. It provides the framework through which we monitor our carbon footprint and continually improve our approach.

We have also summarised the relevant information from our full plan using the prescribed government Carbon Reduction Plan template. This summary has been prepared to meet the requirements of Procurement Policy Note PPN 006 for applicable government contracts.

Taking Practical Action

Our carbon reduction programme focuses on the areas where we can make the most meaningful and practical improvements, including:

  • Fuel efficiency across vessels, plant, generators and vehicles.
  • Efficient project planning, mobilisation and logistics.
  • Reduction of unnecessary plant and vessel runtime.
  • Improved energy and fuel monitoring.
  • More efficient use of materials and improved waste management.
  • Increased visibility of supply-chain and embodied-carbon emissions.
  • Consideration of lower-carbon materials, fuels and construction methods.
  • Use of digital systems to reduce paper consumption and avoidable travel.

Our emissions and progress will be reviewed annually, and our Carbon Reduction Plans will be updated as our data and carbon-management processes develop.
