GPS Marine operates tugs and multicats on long and short distance, sea and ocean towage contracts and on various charter contracts for use in support of projects in ports and on coastal and offshore site operations.

GPS Marine is the largest multi cargo intra port barge operator on the River Thames and Medway and has unrivalled experience in the transport of spoil, aggregates, tunnel ring segments as well as construction equipment and materials along the length of the Rivers Thames, Medway and their tributaries.

Our specialised equipment may be chartered by other organisations and clients within the marine engineering and construction industry. Our turnkey solution gives clients a tried and tested solution to start using or returning to water freight as a means of transport. We also provide marine logistics and transport by barge to major projects on the Thames and Medway.

Group capabilities mean we’re uniquely positioned to assist with consenting water freight infrastructure projects, re-activating or constructing marine infrastructure and operating freight services.

Our large fleet of 52 barges and Thames-based tugs shift about 1 million tonnes of long-term clients’ cargo yearly. That’s approximately 100 Eiffel Towers. A single GPS 1600 series barge is the equivalent of 200-tipper truck road journeys of carbon emissions.

We operate an ISM-accredited vessel safety management system under BSISO 9001, 14001, and 45001. All companies adhere to the highest health and safety, environmental, and equal opportunity standards.

Towage and Craft Hire

We carry out specialist towage operations on the Thames above
and below bridges.

Parts of our fleet also undertake coastal and long-distance towage operations.

Our modern shallow draft multi-purpose anchor handlers, flat top barges and hover barges can be chartered through the Landfall Marine Contractors BV pool.

Dredging

Our SB2709 GPS Avenger and the EC2209 GPS Battler use a 10-metre Darmen plough. Fully adjustable weights and weight distribution can be changed to suit different materials and dredging situations. Ideal for plough dredging it can dredge silt, sand, clay and loose rocks. Depth control is through a feed from the main hoist sheave and client-specific requirements guide the vessel positioning systems.

Backhoe dredging in the Thames and Medway uses our crane barges based at Upnor with appropriately sized excavators for the project. Thames-based tugs and drywell hoppers support dredging operations and transport spoil to local reception facilities.

Machine Shop Services

Machine shop services are carried out for clients by LRN Engineering Limited catering to light and heavy industries and the heritage sector. Our blend of experience and youth delivers innovation and established best workshop practices alongside a 24/7 breakdown service.
